The title points to a ball contest, a game that many Native nations of the eastern woodlands and Southeast played long before European contact. Matches could involve large numbers of players, were often tied to ceremony, healing or relations between communities, and were played with long sticks or hand-held rackets. Europeans who watched these games, including painter George Catlin in the 1830s, recorded them with keen interest, so the scene also reflects how outside observers came to understand Native sport.
