Carved as a woodcut and printed as a poster, this work takes its title from *Akwesasne Notes*, the Mohawk newspaper published at Akwesasne, a community straddling the New York, Ontario and Quebec borders. Its subject is Wounded Knee, South Dakota, where American Indian Movement activists and Oglala Lakota residents occupied the hamlet in 1973 to protest reservation conditions and federal Indian policy, a standoff that drew national attention. Bruce Carter's series ties that protest to the 1890 massacre at the same creek. Two poster variants survive, and one carries a printer's logo.
