Little Round Top and Devil's Den sit at the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, and this view takes in both at once, looking across the boulder-strewn ground where Union and Confederate troops fought on the afternoon of July 2, 1863. Little Round Top's rocky crest was the anchor of the Union left flank, and its defense that day became one of the most studied moments of the battle. Devil's Den, a jumble of granite boulders just to the west, was taken and held by Confederate sharpshooters and infantry before the fighting shifted to the hill itself. The scene is worth studying for how the terrain shaped the fight: the high ground, the rough stone, and the open fields between them.
