Al. G. Field Greater Minstrels was a touring troupe, and this 1907 color lithograph advertises it by naming its star, Al. G. Field, alongside Billy Clark, Harry Van Fossen and Doc Quigley. Field was a well-known minstrel showman who led large traveling companies in the early twentieth century, when minstrel shows remained among the most popular forms of American stage entertainment. The Courier Co. of Buffalo produced the poster, one of many lithographs pasted on walls and billboards in towns along the route. Its blackface conventions, standard in minstrelsy, are worth noting when reading it as a record of popular entertainment.
