Few theater posters from the 1890s carry as much narrative in a single sheet as this one for Bronson Howard's melodrama "Shenandoah." The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it in 1898 for the touring production, which was managed by Jacob Litt, and its tall format and bold color were built to catch passersby on city streets. Howard's play, first staged in 1888, follows Union and Confederate figures in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, and the printed caption, a tender exchange between Col. West and Gertrude, points to the romance and wartime sacrifice that drew audiences to such stories.
