Gillette's Sherlock Holmes is the star here, and this 1900 color lithograph advertises the stage production that William Gillette wrote and starred in, drawn from Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories. Charles Frohman, one of the most powerful Broadway producers of his day, presented the show, and the poster carries his name alongside Gillette's. The Strobridge Litho Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it, one of the leading American firms of the period for theatrical advertising. The subject headings also list a couple embracing, a reminder that the romantic sub-plot was part of the play's appeal.
