Maude Adams, a young actress who would become one of the most celebrated stars of her day, is the center of this 1897 Strobridge lithograph for Charles Frohman's production of J.M. Barrie's The Little Minister. The play, adapted from Barrie's novel about a Scottish minister who falls for a Romani woman, was a major hit on the American stage, and the poster's captions quoting its dialogue give a sense of the romance and rivalry at its heart. Frohman, one of the most powerful theatrical producers in New York, built his reputation on promoting stars like Adams, and posters such as this one were designed to sell the show to passersby on busy city streets.
