Hyde & Behman's Operatic Spectacular Minstrels advertised itself as coming "direct from their own beautiful theater" in Brooklyn, and this 1884 color lithograph shows how the company sold its shows. The subject headings point to side-wheel steamboats and explosions, which suggests the production leaned on large, dramatic stage effects as well as the traditional minstrel format. The poster also lists performers by name, including Geo. H. Fitchett and E. M. Kayne. Its subject heading, "African Americans--Performances & portrayals," is a reminder that minstrel shows of this period relied on blackface caricature, a feature worth keeping in view when reading the image today.
