Few 1890s posters pair a song title with a city name as directly as this one. The title borrows from the sentimental tune by Charles B. Lawlor and James W. Blake, published in 1894, which became a popular favorite and was soon taken up by stage productions. The printer, the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York, was among the busiest makers of color theater posters of the era, and its bold figures and caption lines were built to catch passersby. The subject headings point to tramps, servants, and performances of African American characters, typical of the broad comedy and melodrama that filled American stages at the time.
