The 1899 lithograph announces Lieut. Dan Godfrey's British Guards Band on a tour of America and Australia under the sole direction of Charles A.E. Harriss, and at 282 by 629 centimeters it was built to be seen from across a street. Godfrey directed the band of the Grenadier Guards in London, and touring concert bands of that era drew crowds much as stage companies did, so the poster reads like a theatrical bill. The record credits the artist as Charles Turner Dazey, a poster designer active in the late 1800s, and it also names Walter Brister and the Original Pickaninny Band, a racist stage label that shows the minstrel-era conventions of the period.
