This 1902 color lithograph shows the actor Charles B. Hanford in costume as Petruchio, the blustering suitor who tries to tame the headstrong Katherine in Shakespeare's *The Taming of the Shrew*. Hanford toured with Shakespearean and other classical repertory in the early twentieth century, and posters like this one advertised those tours to small-town and city audiences. The print was made by the U.S. Lithograph Co. and Russell-Morgan Print of Cincinnati and New York, firms that produced theater posters in large runs. Its copyright registration, noted on the sheet, places it at the start of the century, when touring stars relied on bold lithographic advertising.
