The 1916 portrait is titled Che-na-wah-Weitch-ah-wah and was made by Lucy Thompson of Eureka, California, who registered it for copyright that year. Thompson, born in 1856, had close ties to the Yurok people of the Klamath River region, and she photographed Native women in traditional dress at a time when federal policy and missionary pressure were pushing many Native customs out of everyday life. Because the emphasis falls on clothing and adornment, the image works as a record of regalia as well as a portrait, and the ornaments and garment details are worth a close look.
