Herblock's drawing takes its title from Jericho, the biblical city whose walls fell after the Israelites marched around them, and applies that image to Montgomery, Alabama. Dated around 1965, the year of the Selma to Montgomery march, it presents segregation and barriers to voter registration as walls that civil rights demonstrators had to break down. Herbert Block, known as Herblock, was a longtime political cartoonist for the Washington Post, and his editorial cartoons often used symbolic imagery to comment on racial injustice. The mix of ink, graphite, and opaque white shows how carefully he built up his drawings.
