Herblock, the longtime editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post, drew this ink-and-graphite piece titled "Animal Farm," a reference to George Orwell's 1945 satirical novel in which farm animals overthrow their owners only to be ruled by a new class of pigs. The drawing uses that allegory to comment on socialism and social class in the 1960s, with swine standing in for the political elite. Its layered construction, with opaque white laid over a graphite underdrawing, shows how carefully the cartoonist built up his images before the final ink work.
