The title's blunt word "compulsory" sets the tone for this Library of Congress print of a Soviet kolkhoz, or collective farm, shown at a members' meeting. Collectivization, carried out across the Soviet Union from the late 1920s, merged private peasant holdings into state-directed farms where labor and output were shared, and many farmers joined only under heavy pressure. The photograph carries a U.S. Information Agency credit, so it was likely made for Cold War publicity meant to show foreign audiences the Soviet countryside, and it reads as much as a political statement as a record of rural life.
