A chicken yard sits beside a federal resettlement project in Hightstown, Mercer County, New Jersey, in this 1935 view. During the Great Depression, the Resettlement Administration built homestead communities like this one for families and workers struggling on marginal land or in failing industries. Such projects often paired small houses with garden plots and poultry flocks, which gave residents eggs, meat, and a little cash income. The negative is on safety film, and it passed through the Office of War Information's overseas picture division, which later held many Farm Security Administration photographs.
