Rather than showing a single finished scene, this print presents a sequence: its French and English title describes how a American homestead or farm is first established and then brought to completion. The design came from Governor Pownal, a former royal governor of Massachusetts Bay, and was painted by Paul Sandby and engraved by James Peake for publication by Thomas Jefferys in London in May 1761. Views of North America were in strong demand in Britain at the time, and the plate was reissued in *Scenographia Americana* in 1768.
