Standing on a city sidewalk, Cosmo Gordon Lang, the Archbishop of York, appears with Major Crawford Stuart and five others in this full-length group portrait. Lang led the York see from 1908 until 1928, before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. The photograph dates to about 1918, near the end of the First World War, when a churchman and a military officer posing together reflected the public role both men held at the time. A U.S. Copyright Office notation in the record shows the image was registered in the United States.
