Few visitors to the Lincoln Memorial in its first year would have expected to see a former French wartime leader before its seated figure, yet the record identifies this National Photo Company negative as Georges Clemenceau at the site. The memorial had been dedicated in May 1922, and Clemenceau, who had guided France through the final stretch of World War I, toured the United States that year. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
