The record places this glass negative at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial on May 30, 1922, the day the monument in West Potomac Park was formally opened to the public. President Warren G. Harding gave the principal address, and the ceremony marked the completion of a memorial that had been authorized by Congress in 1911 and built to Henry Bacon's design, with Daniel Chester French's seated statue of Lincoln inside. The National Photo Company made many views of Washington in these years, and this example was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating.
