Here the camera stands among the crowd, and President Warren G. Harding is shown at the top of the steps, addressing the audience at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial on May 30, 1922. The memorial, designed by architect Henry Bacon and centered on Daniel Chester French's seated statue of Abraham Lincoln, had been under construction for years, and its opening drew a large gathering on the National Mall. Harding's presence marked the occasion as a formal national event. The photograph, from the National Photo Company Collection, shows the scale of the crowd and the ceremonial setting that surrounded the memorial's first public use.
