This photograph shows the seated Lincoln statue inside the memorial while it was still being worked on, with scaffolding and the building's interior around it. Daniel Chester French designed the 19-foot figure, and the Piccirilli Brothers carved it from Georgia white marble in blocks that were assembled on site. The memorial was dedicated in 1922, so a view of the statue in an unfinished state is unusual. Underwood & Underwood, a Washington-based studio known for press and commercial photography, made the print, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1928.
