Seen from the lagoon, the memorial's long reflecting pool carries the eye straight up to the building, which is the view this perspective is built around. Henry Bacon designed the memorial, which was built between 1915 and 1922 and dedicated in 1922, with a Doric colonnade of 36 columns representing the states in the Union at Lincoln's death. This reproduction of an architectural drawing was published as plate XX in a volume titled *Architecture*, though the record gives no date for the print itself. Its setting is worth noticing, since the water was meant to double the white marble and turn the approach into a reflection of the monument.
