Two views of a scale model, photographed with its proposed location, show the Lincoln Memorial before anything was built on the Potomac flats west of the Mall. Congress authorized the memorial in 1911, and the choice of site fit the wider effort to shape the capital's open spaces that followed the 1901 McMillan Plan. Henry Bacon's Doric-columned design, with Daniel Chester French's seated figure of Lincoln, was dedicated in 1922. The photograph was made by the Washington firm Leet, and it captures a plan that was still taking shape.
