The reflecting pool, usually a long stretch of still water framed by walkways, is shown here as an ice rink, with the Lincoln Memorial rising at the far end. The caption card dates the view to January 7, 1923, less than a year after the memorial was dedicated in 1922. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a commercial firm known for stereo views and picture cards sold to the public, so it reflects the kind of everyday scene that was popular in print at the time. Winter skating on the capital's open water was a common sight, and this picture shows the memorial being used by ordinary Washingtonians almost as soon as it opened.
