The seated statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., is shown here wrapped in scaffolding, a reminder that the monument has needed repeated restoration since it opened in 1922. The 19-foot marble figure, carved by Daniel Chester French and the sculptor's assistant Piccirilli Brothers, sits within a Greek Doric colonnade designed by Henry Bacon. Work of this kind, which protects the statue's surfaces and lets crews reach its upper parts, shows how the memorial remains a working monument as well as a public one.
