This photograph shows a seated Lincoln model on its pedestal, a small-scale study of the figure that would later be enlarged for the memorial. Sculptor Daniel Chester French worked through such studies before the final statue was carved from white Georgia marble and dedicated in 1922 in Washington, D.C. Models like this let French test the pose, proportions, and the way the seated figure would read from below, where most visitors would view it. Seeing the model beside the finished memorial shows how much planning went into the monument.
