The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., was still a building site when this view was taken, with scaffolding wrapped around the marble exterior and cranes standing over the colonnade. Construction ran from 1914 to 1922, and the work was slow because the Georgian marble had to be cut, dressed and set one block at a time. Frame the scene against the finished temple and you see how much of the monument's familiar outline depended on those lifting machines and the crews who worked high on the scaffolds.
