The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., appears here not as the finished building visitors know today but as a design proposal submitted for an open colonnade. Competition and early design drawings like this one show how architects imagined the memorial before its final form was settled. The memorial was designed by Henry Bacon and dedicated in 1922 on the National Mall, honoring Abraham Lincoln, whose seated statue by Daniel Chester French sits at its center. Comparing this concept with the built monument reveals how much the final design depended on the balance of its columns and the open views toward the Reflecting Pool.
