The Lincoln Memorial and Memorial Bridge are seen here from above, showing how the monument sits at the western end of the National Mall with the Potomac River running past it. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon and dedicated in 1922, was built as a marble temple to Abraham Lincoln, with its seated figure by Daniel Chester French looking east toward the Capitol. The bridge, which links the memorial to Arlington across the river, was completed in 1932 and frames the view from the air, making the axis between the two shores easy to follow. Aerial views like this one show how the city's planned layout ties its monuments together.
