The Lincoln Memorial was still on paper when this preliminary drawing was made, so it shows the building as its designers first imagined it rather than as visitors know it today. The memorial was designed by Henry Bacon, who adapted the forms of a Greek temple to honor Abraham Lincoln, and it was dedicated in 1922 on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Preliminary studies like this one reveal how the architect worked through the proportions, colonnade and seated figure before the final plans were set. Worth noticing is how the drawing anticipates the monument's balance of white marble, open columns and a monumental interior.
