Printed in color as a lithograph around 1917, this poster makes its appeal in three plain words: buy Liberty Bonds. The Treasury Department began selling Liberty Loans that year, soon after the United States entered World War I, to finance the war effort. Lithography allowed large runs in bright color at low cost, so posters like this one appeared in post offices, banks, schools and storefronts nationwide. Its direct call to action shows how the government turned civilian savings into a form of patriotic duty.
