Few photographs capture the Lincoln Memorial while it was still a building site, and this glass negative, dated January 1915, shows the structure partway through construction on the National Mall in Washington. Architect Henry Bacon's design was not dedicated until May 1922, so the scene records years of work that most later visitors never saw. The negative came from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets and monuments in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the glass, caused by aging of its original coatings, are part of the image's physical history.
