Taken on July 16, 1926, this glass negative shows the Lincoln Memorial just four years after its dedication in 1922, when the marble temple on the National Mall was still new to most visitors. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's monuments and street life in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look closely and you may see streaks or blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
