In this 1924 National Photo Company view, Col. Sherrill and Capt. A.A. Andrews are shown turning on the Rainbow Fountain on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on October 16. The Memorial had been dedicated only two years earlier, in 1922, and its grounds were still being developed into the landmark it is today. The National Photo Company documented Washington's public life and monuments in these years, so the picture captures a ceremonial moment at a newly completed site. The original glass negative shows some streaks and blemishes from age, which are typical of plates of this era.
