From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, this 1922 glass negative looks east across the grounds toward the Washington Monument, which still dominated the capital's skyline. It was made on May 5, 1922, only weeks before the memorial's dedication on May 30, when the marble building and its surroundings were still taking shape. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, produced many views of the city's landmarks for a popular market. Faint streaks and spots across the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, and they are part of the negative's history.
