The Lincoln Memorial's interior is the detail that sets this picture apart: the photographer turned the camera toward the wall where the Gettysburg Address is carved, rather than the seated statue that draws most visitors. The memorial was dedicated in 1922 on the West Potomac Park site along the National Mall, and by the mid-1920s its inscribed speech had become a place of quiet reading for visitors. The photograph was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that suggests it was made for publication or sale as a view of the monument. Its date of about 1924 places it only a few years after the building opened to the public.
