Boats on Yellowstone Lake, one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America, carried visitors to shores and islands that were otherwise hard to reach during the park's early tourist years. F. Jay Haynes, the park's longtime photographer, ran a studio at Mammoth Hot Springs and sold scenes like this one as postcards, which helped shape how travelers pictured the park. Cards of this kind offer a useful look at the leisurely lake travel that was part of a Yellowstone visit in the early twentieth century.
