Lockport sits where the Erie Canal drops down the Niagara Escarpment, and the locks here were built to lower boats through a steep limestone ridge in a series of stepped chambers. The title's "locking down" describes a vessel descending, with water let out of the chamber until it sinks to the level of the next stretch of canal. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and transformed western New York by linking Buffalo to the Hudson River and New York City, and Lockport's flight of locks was among its most demanding engineering works. The card gives no date, but the scene reflects the canal's long working life, when mules and steam-powered boats moved freight and passengers through the town.
