The copyright line names A. Wittemann of Brooklyn as the photographer, and the subject tags point to Newport, Rhode Island, though the caption card is old and not fully verified. The New York Yacht Club, founded in Manhattan in 1844, spent its summers racing from Newport, and its clubhouse there became a social center for wealthy yachtsmen. The club also held the America's Cup for most of the period from 1857 to 1983, so a photograph of its premises from around 1906 records a time when its racing and social life were at their height.
