Published in *Judge* on October 19, 1895, across pages 248 and 249, this color lithograph by the magazine's cartoonist Victor makes an appeal on Cuba's behalf. Fighting against Spanish rule had flared again in February 1895, led in part by José Martí, and Spain struggled to contain the revolt with a large army. American opinion was divided between sympathy for the rebels and caution about becoming involved in a war, and weekly humor magazines like *Judge* used images like this one to shape public feeling about a crisis just off the coast.
