Tampa was the main staging ground for the U.S. Army's expedition to Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and this stereograph captures the waterfront where soldiers and supplies were readied for the crossing. In the summer of 1898, thousands of troops camped around Tampa and nearby Port Tampa while transports were loaded at the piers. The card was issued by the Whiting Brothers of Cincinnati around 1900, when stereo views of recent military events were popular with home audiences who used them in parlor viewers to relive the war.
