This stereograph shows troop transports leaving Tampa, Florida, for Cuba, with the ship Vigilance named in its caption. Tampa served as a major staging port in 1898, when the U.S. Army gathered men and supplies there for the invasion of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The caption also tags African Americans as a subject, and Black regiments, including the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry, were among the units that sailed for the campaign. Keystone View Company, which sold stereo cards to a wide public, issued the card under the copyright of photographer B.L. Singley, so the image reflects how Americans at home encountered the war through commercial views.
