A pencil study for a magazine cover, this drawing pairs Columbia, the allegorical figure long used for the United States, with Cuba, the island at the center of the 1898 Spanish-American War. Dated to about 1898, the year the United States fought Spain over Cuban independence, the work reflects how American illustrators turned the conflict into symbolic figures for a national audience. Because it is a nude study, the artist was likely working out the anatomy and pose before the final printed design. Its surviving pencil lines show the planning behind an image meant to be reproduced widely.
