This lithograph, titled *Irish Exiles: The Cuba Five*, shows five men who are named by their signatures printed beneath the image, a detail that ties the picture to particular individuals rather than to a generic group of émigrés. Two stanzas of verse run below the portraits, beginning "They hither came with confidence," and the subject line quotes their lament that "they hither came in banishment." Robison & Mooney made the stone in New York, and McClure Brothers published it from their Bowery address around 1871, when Irish nationalist exiles in the Americas were a common subject for sympathetic prints. The copyright notation shows the publisher registered the work for sale, which suggests it was aimed at Irish-American buyers.
