Mary Adelaide Nutting (1858–1948) is the sitter here, and this halftone reproduces what the record describes as an oil painting, though the catalogers mark that attribution with a question mark. Nutting was a nurse, educator and nursing leader who helped build the field's professional standards in the United States. She took part in the early development of nursing education, most notably through her work at Johns Hopkins and at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she helped establish one of the first university-based nursing programs. Printed between about 1900 and 1930, the portrait reflects the period when such images circulated widely in periodicals and books that presented women leaders in public life.
