Few sixth-plate daguerreotypes of the 1850s survive with their hand coloring this intact, and this small portrait of Mary Susan Everett Abbot, shown in profile facing right, is one of them. Her image was made around 1854, when daguerreotypes were the most common form of portrait photography. Its silver-coated copper plate was fitted with a brass mat stamped "Hale," and the tinted cheeks and clothing were added by hand to a process that otherwise produced only a monochrome image. The picture comes from the Henry L. Abbot family papers at the Library of Congress, which preserve the family's personal documents, and it offers a glimpse of how middle-class sitters presented themselves before the Civil War. Mary Susan Everett Abbot lived from 1832 to 1871.
