Few places in Idaho Territory drew as much attention in the early 1880s as the Wood River Valley, where silver strikes beginning around 1880 brought miners, merchants and speculators into a high desert valley that had barely been surveyed. This bird's-eye panorama, drawn by A. E. Browning and printed by the Collier & Cleaveland lithographic firm, shows the valley's camps and settlements from the elevated oblique angle that was popular for presenting western towns at the time. Such views were often sold to residents and investors eager to see growth laid out on paper, so the map works as both a survey of the district and a promotion of its boom years.
