Butte, Montana, appears here as a bird's-eye view from 1884, when the mining town was expanding rapidly around its silver and copper veins. Henry Wellge, a Milwaukee artist who drew many panoramic city views in that decade, made the drawing, and the publishing credits are shared among Beck & Pauli, W. Coleman & Co., and J. J. Stoner. Maps like this were built to present a town favorably, so the streets, rail lines, and mine works are worth studying alongside the idealized perspective. The mine-covered hill that rises above the town is the feature that most sets this view apart from other panoramas of the period.
