Hillsborough Bridge, the village named in this 1884 panorama, grew up around a crossing of the Contoocook River in south-central New Hampshire. Henry Wellge, working with the firm Norris & Wellge, drew the town from an elevated oblique angle, the bird's-eye style that made these maps popular for showing streets, mills, churches, and houses at a glance. The town is also the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president, so readers interested in New England village life or 19th-century map design will find the view useful for both local history and the craft of the period.
